Reasons to Choose Assisted Living

Reasons to Choose Assisted Living

While “aging in place” for senior adults is a good idea in theory, it is not always a viable option for everyone. An assisted living community can offer benefits that aren’t always available to older adults who remain at home as they age. Are you considering assisted living for yourself or an elderly loved one? There are lots of good reasons to choose a senior living community. We’ve listed our top reasons below.

Safety

One of the biggest issues facing senior adults who live at home alone is safety. As we age, we become more vulnerable to a number of threats including serious falls, improper medication use, home invasion, and more. Assisted living communities are designed with the safety and security of seniors in mind. Every apartment and communal area is designed with safety features including secure entrances, handrails, non-slip flooring, and alert systems so that seniors can call for help in an emergency. Care staff is available around the clock to assist residents in urgent situations.

Social interaction

Seniors may be under the impression that they will lose contact with family and friends if they move into a senior living community. In reality, the exact opposite is often the case. Assisted living communities are also designed with senior socialization in mind. There are scheduled group activities and outings, holiday parties, book clubs, exercise classes, community gardens, and so much more that seniors can participate in with not only family and friends, but other community members as well. They can receive visitors in their apartment, the library, outdoor areas, and the large dining area. There is always space to host family gatherings as well.

Transportation

For many senior adults, driving may become a safety issue or they may no longer be able to financially own and maintain a vehicle. Mobility issues may also make it harder to drive. It becomes burdensome for busy family members and caregivers to provide the necessary transportation to and from the doctor’s office, grocery store, place of worship, and the many other places an elderly person needs to go on a regular basis.

An assisted living community offers transportation services to shuttle residents everywhere from events in the community to local shopping centers, and just about everywhere in between. Door to door transportation can easily be arranged for medical appointments. On-site transportation services help relieve the stress and worry of getting around with mobility issues.

Peace of mind

Owning a home is an expense that we can handle when we are younger. We are also better able to keep up with all of the maintenance required of homeownership like yard work and home repairs. When a senior is no longer able to keep up with the cost and maintenance of owning a home, those responsibilities often fall to family members, whose busy schedules make it hard to stay on top of things for someone else.

In a senior living community, a dedicated maintenance staff ensures the community is well maintained and clean, and handles any repairs that are needed. Maintaining a small apartment instead of a 3 bedroom home is easier for seniors on a day to day basis. If there are daily chores that they are struggling to manage, assistance is always available from the on-site care staff. For family caregivers, assisted living allows you to be free of the time you would have spent decluttering mom’s house to instead enjoying your time with mom.

When the time comes to make the decision about moving into an assisted living community, many seniors struggle with the idea at first. More often than not, however, they regret not making the move sooner.
